Struggling with Overwhelm, Guilt, & Burnout?
You're Not Alone.

Unaddressed feelings create tension, showing up as irritability, resentment, anger, and conflict. Emotional suppression not only affects mental and emotional well-being but also causes physically symptoms like headaches, insomnia, and fatigue, as the body struggles to manage the ongoing stress caused by emotional repression and the brain continues to process unaddressed emotions in the background.

The solution to breaking this cycle lies in honoring AND expressing emotions through mindfulness-based practices.

Irritability and the Impacts of Unexpressed Emotions

Emotional Suppression in Daily Life

Suppressed Emotions and Guilt

Snapping at your children, arguing with a partner, feeling irritated with work, and feeling guilty are clear indicators of burnout caused by emotional suppression. Suppressing emotions like stress and frustration leads to an accumulation of unresolved feelings that eventually explode in everyday interactions. Research shows that when emotions are consistently pushed down, they lead to emotional exhaustion, making it harder to stay patient and calm, particularly with family members.

Suppressed emotions often rear their head in situations that might not seem significant but trigger us with explosive reactions. If you feel you've overreacted to seemingly small events (spills, messes, anxiety rushing out the door, or yelling at bed time) you are most likely experiencing the result of long-term emotional buildup. Emotional suppression also compounds guilt. Studies show that unresolved guilt leads to chronic stress and anxiety, further contributing to burnout and a sense of failure.

What Research Tells Us About Suppressing Our Emotions

What is Emotional Suppression?

Emotional Suppression

Emotional suppression is the conscious or unconscious process of suppressing or avoiding the honoring or expression of emotions, especially negative or difficult ones, such as anger, sadness, or fear. Instead of acknowledging and processing these feelings, a person might shove them down or bottle them up, either to avoid discomfort or because they believe expressing emotions is wrong or unacceptable.

Common ways to avoid or numb the feelings are:
  • Overwork
  • Scrolling
  • Shopping
  • Food
  • Attachment to achievements or goals,
  • Perfectionism
  • People pleasing (putting other's needs in front of your own)
  • And not acknowledging your emotions with comments like "I'm fine."

Over time, this suppression can lead to emotional buildup, which may show up as stress, anxiety, frustration, or emotional outbursts. It's a common coping mechanism, but one that often hinders emotional well-being, relationships, and personal growth in the long run.
