Unaddressed feelings create tension, showing up as irritability, resentment, anger, and conflict. Emotional suppression not only affects mental and emotional well-being but also causes physically symptoms like headaches, insomnia, and fatigue, as the body struggles to manage the ongoing stress caused by emotional repression and the brain continues to process unaddressed emotions in the background.
Snapping at your children, arguing with a partner, feeling irritated with work, and feeling guilty are clear indicators of burnout caused by emotional suppression. Suppressing emotions like stress and frustration leads to an accumulation of unresolved feelings that eventually explode in everyday interactions. Research shows that when emotions are consistently pushed down, they lead to emotional exhaustion, making it harder to stay patient and calm, particularly with family members.
Suppressed emotions often rear their head in situations that might not seem significant but trigger us with explosive reactions.
