Hey Beautiful, I'm Jessica.

To the outside world everything looked amazing, yet inside I wanted something different. I was working 60-80 hour per week in corporate, taking care of the kids, house, bills, etc., and trying to keep everyone happy at the expense of myself. I felt exhausted, snapped at my kids, argued with my partner, and felt unfulfilled in my career. I knew I needed change. I didn’t know exactly what that was, but I was searching for answers.

As an overachiever I was always reading (or listening) to books, learning, taking on yet another tiger team project to grow professionally, and while my career was marked with achievements. My inner world was in turmoil - a constant go, go, go with no time for me or my needs - leaving me frustrated, angry, anxious, resentful, and irritable which continuously spilled out onto my kids no matter how many times I vowed to change, which left me in a constant state of guilt. 

I wanted to be able to stay calm, not lash out on my kids, and stop feeling so overwhelmed and stressed all the time.  Yet, I didn't have the tools that worked, nor did I have the time or space in my busy schedule.

Until, at 17 weeks pregnant with my third child, I no longer had the option. The doctors informed us that our unborn child may not live, which changed my life forever.  Durning that time I started turning inwards for answers and I discovered that I had been suppressing my true emotions and in doing so suppressing the real me - who I am ,what I want, and my heart's desires. I got caught up in the go, go , go of life, doing everything for everyone else, and felt resentment piling up.

Yet, here's what I also discovered, we have the ability to heal our suppressed emotions and every time we do we become more of ourselves - our true passions come to life, we feel happier, healthier, more alive and fulfilled. Our relationships with ourselves and our loved ones improve. Our anger simmers, our joy grows, our resentment heals and our purposeful path growths.

With the knowledge, wisdom, insight, and guidance I have gained on my healing journey and in holistic eduction, I have created the 3-Step Rediscovery Process. This process is a guides you rediscover your Self by identifying and unpacking all that you have been holding onto for decades.

So, why was I suppressing my true emotions?

It's not like I didn't feel...

I frequently seemed to find myself teetering between irritability and stress, with glimpses of happiness until my inner critic would interrupt me with my never ending to-do list which then made me feel guilty. 

I wasn't suppressing my feelings - I continuously felt. I felt anxiety and experienced the behavioral symptoms:
  • Procrastination
  • Avoiding conflict
  • Overplanning
  • Need to control
  • Nonstop thoughts
  • Rechecking emails or projects
  • Over analyzing 
I felt anger, resentment, exhaustion, even rage. 

But here's what I didn't feel: I didn't feel worthy of honoring or expressing my true emotions. 

How did this happen? Let's go back... In childhood, my feelings and emotions were quickly brushed under the rug growing up.  "Cry and I'll give you something to cry about" was a common phrase. My anger was especially not tolerated - I would get in trouble, yelled at, or even spanked for expressing anger.  I learned quickly to shoved down (aka suppress) how I felt. 

When we internalize the belief that we are unworthy of expressing our feelings, we often develop coping mechanisms that suppress our emotions and distort our self-perception. Some common behaviors that emerge from this belief include:

  • Emotional suppression: We may learn to hide or downplay our emotions, fearing judgment or rejection if we express how we truly feel. This can lead to emotional numbness or a disconnection from our inner world.
  • People-pleasing: A desire to avoid conflict or rejection can drive us to prioritize others' feelings and needs over our own, often leading to a lack of boundaries and neglecting our own emotional needs.
  • Self-criticism: Believing that our feelings are invalid or unimportant may fuel negative self-talk, where we constantly criticize or judge ourselves for having emotions at all.
  • Inauthenticity: We may suppress emotions to conform to societal or cultural expectations, creating a divide between our true feelings and the persona we present to the world. This can lead to a loss of authenticity and, ultimately, a disconnection from their true self.
  • Fear of vulnerability: We may avoid being emotionally open with others, worrying that showing our true selves will lead to rejection, ridicule, or loss of connection.
  • Seeking external validation: Instead of trusting our own emotions, we might rely on others to validate our worth, hoping that external approval will compensate for our internal lack of self-worth.
  • Perfectionism: The belief that we need to be perfect in order to be valued can make us suppress "imperfect" emotions like sadness, anger, or fear, further disconnecting us from our authentic selves.
  • Overworking or overachieving: To compensate for feelings of unworthiness, we might throw ourselves into work or external accomplishments, hoping that success will justify our worth and allow us to "earn" the right to feel.
