Embrace Every Emotion: A Guide to Finding Purpose and Healing Through Feelings

If you only live in the external bliss of Spirit, you will miss the feelings of being human. These feelings lead you to your purpose and create the change you wish to see in the world. We were meant to feel it all.

Understanding the Importance of Feeling All Emotions

Feeling is being alive. That is the blessing of being human. We get to feel the full spectrum of emotions. We get to experience what it means to be human. Every feeling we have is our Soul calling us back home to the Love within us.

It seems all we do is run from or towards a feeling. We want something in life because it will make us feel a certain way, or we don’t want something in life because it will make us feel a certain way. Yet, we were meant to feel it all. Each feeling is a call home, whether that is joy or pain, love or fear. We are constantly being called home to feel.

The Divine Mother of All wants us to experience true bliss. She wants us to have everything we could ever imagine and more. All She asks is that we feel it all. When we are fully and truly present with our feelings in love and compassion, we are with Her.

Every feeling can be accompanied by the love of our Divine Mother of All, if we allow it. If we open our hearts and let Her in. She is always here for us.

If you think about it, the times when you experience anger, frustration, rage, or irritation often occur after long droughts of providing yourself with love, acceptance, and compassion. These feelings are actually a call back home. But most of us don’t feel them, we ignore them, suppress them, and react to them instead of being with them. 

It’s when you are craving love, belonging, and the desire to be taken care of that “unwanted” emotions arise. When we don’t hear the whispers of the Soul, the emotions speak louder. 

You don’t have to get quiet. You just have to get open – open your heart – feel and love yourself in every feeling.

How to Process Emotions Mindfully

If all we are called to do is feel it all, then in the moment the feeling arises, be fully enveloped in it. Watch it move through your body, experience it, express it, honor it, love it, and hold it in compassion.

The feeling came to you to be felt. You don’t have to dwell in the feeling. In fact, you don’t have to take that feeling beyond one breath. You have the ability to feel everything that needs to be felt in one breath. It is our fear of feeling it or our attachment to the feeling that keeps us in the feeling.

There are many who say don’t get caught up in the feeling—disconnect from it and watch it. You can do that. Yet, if you allow yourself to truly feel the feeling that is being asked of you, why disconnect from it? What is your fear in feeling the feeling?

Practical Steps to Honor and Release Emotions

You wonder why you’re numb, unfulfilled, always seeking the next best thing. Well, have you felt your feelings? Truly felt them? Not the lingering irritation and frustration, not the rage you have on the road, or the yelling at the kids, or the passive-aggressive comments to your partner—all covers for the true emotions.

When was the last time you allowed yourself to feel? You want to feel joy, but have you experienced and felt pain? You want to feel love, but have you experienced and felt heartbreak?

When we are present with the feeling or emotion, we are in the present moment. Many spiritual teachers talk about being present in the moment, but try to be present in the moment with an emotion.

What if all you are called to do is to feel it all, with no judgment, just love and compassion?

The 3-Step Rediscovery Process

Here is the 3-Step Rediscovery Process to help with emotions. Take three deep breaths and then begin the Rediscovery Process:

Step 1: Realize – Become Aware Notice and identify your emotions. Using mindfulness, notice how the emotion feels in your body and identify what you are feeling. Ask yourself:

  • Where do I feel this feeling in my body?
  • What am I feeling? Name the feeling, if possible.
  • Is there an underlying emotion? If yes, what is it, how does it make me feel, and where do I feel it in my body?

Step 2: Reconnect – Honor and Accept One of the keys to honoring our emotions is to accept them nonjudgmentally. When we suppress or repress our emotions, they can become more intense. Giving ourselves permission to feel the emotions and accept them nonjudgmentally allows the emotion to dissipate through us. Using mindfulness, allow the emotions—all the thoughts, feelings, images, and sensations—to move through you. Use your breath.

Step 3: Release – Listen to What You Need, Forgive, and Bring in Unconditional Love In this process, allow yourself to feel compassion and then allow yourself to release the emotion. Emotions can be moved in many ways, including through movement, sound, talking, breathing, and more. Move your body with any form of exercise, yoga, running, biking, or even jumping, dancing, hula hooping, or stomping your feet.

While you can do things to “release” the emotion, in actuality nothing is required to release the emotions. The Divine Mother of All knows the desires of our heart.

All you have to do is feel, She takes care of the rest.

Remember that this is a process. Allowing our emotions to flow doesn’t happen overnight; we’ve spent decades suppressing them. Have patience and compassion for yourself. We all make mistakes. This is how we learn. Make the goal to understand, grow, and heal a little each day. Forgive yourself and others when necessary. We are all remembering what it is to love and accept ourselves fully.
